Local emergency teams join forces

A new group called 4 SF Heights combines emergency response teams from Pacific Heights, Lower Pacific Heights, Laurel Heights and Presidio Heights. In the wake of the disaster in Haiti, the group has scheduled monthly practice sessions.

“Our goal is to revitalize all four teams and build the critical mass required to respond more confidently and effectively, both as individuals and as a neighborhood team, when disaster strikes close to home,” says coordinator Barbara Graham.

More from the Neighborhood Emergency Response Team coordinator:

After watching the media coverage of the catastrophic Haiti earthquake, it makes us painfully aware of the massive destruction, tragic human suffering and loss, and the tremendous challenges that rescue and disaster relief workers are facing in the aftermath. If we only learn one lesson from this devastating urban quake, it is the critical importance for our NERTs to be well prepared by maintaining their skills and knowledge at the highest level. What we know for sure is that NERTs will be desperately needed to play a vital role whenever the Big One hits here in San Francisco, especially in the first three to five days.

The reality is many of us are concerned that our NERT skills are quite rusty. Truthfully, we probably don’t even remember as much as we would like. What we do need is the opportunity to practice with our neighborhood team members the crucial NERT skills that we learned in our NERT training.

Well, now you can. We have formed an exciting new practice group called 4 SF Heights NERTs, which combines the Pacific Heights, Lower Pacific Heights, Laurel Heights and Presidio Heights NERT Teams. Our goal is to revitalize all four teams and build the critical mass required to respond more confidently and effectively, both as individuals and as a neighborhood team, when disaster strikes close to home. NERTs from our 4 neighborhoods will be getting together to practice and learn on the first Tuesday of each month from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We encourage you to join us. Our next practice session will be:

Tuesday, February 2, 2010
Jewish Community Center SF (JCCSF)
3200 California St. at Presidio, Room 207
7:30-9:00 PM
February’s practice will be “Organizing the Staging Area.”

How can you find out where future 4 SF Heights NERTs practice sessions will be held each month and the skills to be covered? Here’s more exciting news! We’ve adopted a terrific new way to keep you updated, communicate with you quicker, share better and collaborate more easily through our own private, trusted and secure on-line group on BigTent.com. For our BigTent group to be most effective, we are urging every NERT who lives in Pacific Heights, Lower Pacific Heights, Laurel Heights and Presidio Heights to accept our email invitation from BigTent, even if you can’t participate actively in our monthly practice sessions.
